Moncton, New Brunswick is a bilingual city, and it shows up in Google’s suggestions. At the 2021 census, about 59 per cent of Moncton residents had English as their mother tongue and a little over a quarter had French, and about 46 per cent understood both. Dieppe leans French and Riverview leans English, so a business anywhere in Greater Moncton may be found by people who type in either language, or switch between them in the same afternoon. This guide is about what that means for a business website: the searches people actually use, and the page structure that lets a bilingual customer base find what it needs.
What the searches look like
French searches in Moncton are short. People usually type the trade in French and the city name as it is: “dentiste moncton”, “plombier moncton”, “plomberie moncton”, “coiffeur moncton”, “pharmacie moncton”, “comptable moncton nb”, “avocat moncton nb”. Google drops the accents in its suggestions, so “electricite moncton” and “deneigement moncton” are how these words often appear in practice.
Two other things stand out. First, the French and English versions often sit side by side: a search for “plombier moncton” also suggests “plumber moncton”, and “dentiste moncton” suggests “dentist moncton nb”. Searchers move between the two. Second, the French suggestions are much shorter than the English ones. There is a long list for “dentist moncton” (by street, by “open now”, by “direct billing”) and almost nothing for the French equivalent beyond the basic term. The detailed searches, by street or by “open now”, show up mainly in English, so a page that helps a French-speaking searcher has to do that work in the page itself.
What a page can do about it
A page cannot make a business bilingual. It can make the existing bilingual service easy to see. Here are the pieces that matter, from simplest to most involved.
Label your contact options
If your front desk or technicians work in both languages, say so in a clearly labelled line near the phone number and the contact form: Service in English and French. If only some people or some hours cover French, say that instead. A label that promises more than you can deliver is worse than no label, because the caller who reaches an English-only voice is more frustrated than one who never saw it. Put the same information in your Google Business Profile.
Add French service names beside the English ones
On a service page, a short pairing in the heading or the first line is enough: Plumbing / Plomberie, Dental care / Soins dentaires, Snow removal / Déneigement. This puts the word people type onto the page, so Google can match it, and it tells a French-speaking visitor they are in the right place. Use the words your own customers use. Those suggestion lists include informal forms such as “reno moncton”, which is how many people shorten “rénovation”, but your page should use the term you would say to a customer’s face.
Build separate French pages only if you will keep them up
The fuller version is a French page for each service that matters to you, with its own web address, the page language declared, a link between the English and French versions using hreflang tags, and the same structured data as the English page. This is the setup Google expects for pages in two languages, and it keeps each version from being treated as a duplicate of the other. It also means two pages to update every time your hours, prices or process change, written in French by someone who is comfortable doing so. A French page that is a year out of date, or half finished, does more harm than a clear line on the English page saying you serve customers in French.
To be plain about our own part: we build the structure, such as the labels, the paired headings, the page templates and the language tags. We do not translate or write French copy. That wording has to come from you or from someone you trust to write it.
Keep your Google Business Profile consistent
If you serve both languages, fill in your Google Business Profile in both where it allows, with the same business name, address and phone number everywhere. Do not create a second listing for a French name. Duplicate profiles split your reviews and confuse the map results. Reviews written in either language count, and replying to each in the language it was written in is a good habit if you are able to.
Which businesses gain the most
The businesses where a language label matters most are the ones where the customer may be stressed or short of time, or where trust depends on being understood: dentists and clinics, plumbers and heating companies, accountants and real estate lawyers. A French searcher typing “avocat immobilier moncton” wants to know quickly whether your office can help in French before reading anything else on the page.
For a restaurant, a hair salon or a retail shop, a bilingual menu or service list and a clear line about languages spoken at the counter usually covers it.
What to leave out
Three things are not worth the effort. Automatic translation plug-ins produce awkward French and are not a substitute for a page written by a person. Language pop-ups that block the page on arrival frustrate everyone. And a page that mentions language only to describe your bilingual advantage in general terms tells a searcher nothing. Say what you actually offer, where, and at which hours.
Searches for agency services, in either language, are thin in Moncton. “marketing numérique moncton” leads back to “digital marketing moncton”, and “agence web moncton” returns nothing at all. That tells you the strongest opportunity sits with local trades and professionals, whose customers are already typing their needs.
